Kids Kicking Cancer Rebrands as MATIO to Broaden Support for Children with Serious Illness

New identity reflects national expansion and a proven, martial arts-based model that helps children manage pain, stress and trauma

After more than 25 years of helping children face illness with strength and calm, Kids Kicking Cancer is entering a bold new chapter. The organization today announced its rebrand to MATIO, an acronym for Martial Arts Therapy. Inside & Out, signaling an expanded mission to support children navigating any serious illness, not just cancer.

Founded in 1999, the organization has delivered its evidence-based, trauma-informed programming to thousands of children across the U.S. and around the world, offering them tools to manage pain, reduce anxiety, and rediscover agency in the face of medical adversity. As MATIO, the organization will bring this work to even more families through expanded partnerships with hospitals, clinics and community organizations.

“For decades, we’ve seen the transformational power of our method, how breathwork, focus and movement grounded in martial arts can help children take back control, even in the most uncertain circumstances,” said Kristen Cometto-Russ, CEO of MATIO. “This rebrand reflects who we’ve already become: a trusted partner to children facing not just cancer, but a wide range of health challenges.”

This evolution includes a new name, visual identity, and strategic vision, but the heart of MATIO’s mission remains unchanged: helping children reclaim their power.

“We’ve always believed that kids are more than patients, they are fighters, creators, leaders,” said Cometto-Russ. “Our programs don’t just distract from illness; they empower kids to rise above it.”

As part of its national relaunch, MATIO will introduce its updated brand to partners, providers and families through targeted outreach and expanded programming. The organization is preparing to scale its impact by offering hospitals, clinics and community organizations a proven, non-pharmacological approach to pain and stress management, anchored in martial arts, mindfulness and trauma-informed care.
