Advancing Sustainable Land Use Through Solar Grazing
LRE (Leeward Renewable Energy) will host its first grazing training at the Morrow Lake Solar facility in Frio County, Texas, on October 23 in collaboration with the American Solar Grazing Association (ASGA). The session will bring together solar industry professionals, grazing experts, and community partners to learn about the use of agrivoltaics, combining renewable energy production with sustainable agriculture, across utility-scale projects.
LRE incorporates solar grazing as part of its vegetation management strategy to help restore soil health, prevent erosion, extend pollinator bloom cycles, reduce emissions, and minimize chemical use.
“Hosting this training is part of LRE’s strong commitment to responsible development and land stewardship,” said Willem van der Ven, Chief Operating Officer at LRE. “We work with experts in soil science, ecology, and regenerative agriculture to develop vegetation management plans that promote biodiversity. By embracing solar grazing and other innovative practices, we are helping create long-term value for the land, our local partners, and the broader environment.”
The certification training is open to solar professionals across asset management, operations, development, sustainability, community engagement, construction and engineering, offering value to employees at every level, from site technicians to senior leadership.
The comprehensive training includes:
- Grazing and vegetation management
- Sheep care and behavior around equipment and personnel
- Site safety, potential hazards, and mortality response protocols
- Livestock guardian dog integration
- Designing sheep-friendly solar project layouts
- Best practices for partnering with local grazers
LRE is proud to serve as one of the hosts for ASGA’s 2025 certification training series. The initiative reflects a shared commitment to advancing agrivoltaics, improving environmental outcomes, and building stronger relationships between renewable energy companies and the agricultural community.
