Johns Manville to Demonstrate Superior Features of Its Fiber Glass Products for Retrofit Applications at DOE Weatherization Training Conference

Johns Manville (JM), a leading manufacturer and marketer of premium-quality building and specialty products, will demonstrate the benefits of its Formaldehyde-freeTM fiber glass insulation products for retrofit applications at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Weatherization Training Conference in Indianapolis July 21-24. JM will share results of recent performance tests comparing Johns Manville fiber glass to cellulose products.

The company will offer hands-on demonstrations of JM Spider® for drill-and-fill applications in a variety of scenarios, and will make up to 10 bags of JM Spider® available to 50 weatherization agencies for their own evaluation. Representatives will also discuss the advantages of JM Climate Pro® for attics, nonconforming spaces and hard-to-reach areas.

“We want to help weatherization agencies and contractors, utilities and state and local energy program managers fully understand the benefits of JM fiber glass for weatherization applications,” said Stephen Crouch, residential market manager for Johns Manville. “We want to clear up misconceptions where they exist and help people make informed decisions about what products they use.”

For wall retrofits, JM Spider enables installers to achieve up to an impressive R-15 in 2x4 cavities and R-24 in 2x6 cavities, among the highest R-values available in the industry. And, because the material is naturally mold-resistant, fiber glass is ideal for mobile homes and any other installation where moisture could be a concern.

JM Spider has unique advantages over cellulose insulation for drill-and-fill applications, higher maximum R-value in both 2x4 and 2x6 walls, better air-flow resistance at higher densities and less potential to cause moisture-related problems, such as mold growth and decay. JM Spider does not settle over time or hold moisture, and it works with most blowing machines.

Recent company performance tests of JM Spider show:

  • It has 30 percent better air-flow resistance at 2.2 pounds per cubic foot (pcf) than cellulose at 4.0 pcf.
  • It achieves R-15.2 in a 2x4 wall at 2.2 pcf, compared to an R-11.6 for cellulose at 4.0 pcf.

“The new data confirm what we have long believed, that JM Spider is the logical choice for anyone who wants to improve overall home performance in the most cost-effective manner over the life of the home,” said John B. Smith, P.E., Global Platform Leader for the Environmental Construction team at Johns Manville. “These are significant differences.”
