Welcome Taajah. You’re a very busy woman. On any given day you can be found on the east, west coast or somewhere in between. Where do you get your energy from?
Thomas, thanks for having me. I guess you can say that God made me this way. I’m definitely a bundle of energy. I get an average of 5 hours of sleep per night. I’ve had the same sleeping pattern since I was in the Marine Corps. I go to bed late and wake up early. No coffee, caffeine or vitamins. Just natural. I do love to drink herbal, flavored, decaffeinated tea in the morning for the heat. No sugar. I tend to use splenda. I also don’t do any particular diet. I eat practically everything in moderation. Even pork. Yep, God made me this way.
Your resume is impressive. You’re an author, patient advocate & coach, business consultant, event promoter and owner of a few national championships. That’s diversity at it’s best. Do you ever feel like giving up?
I wouldn’t be human if I didn’t have days and moments when I doubted myself or my purpose. Quitting is always an easy way out? Doubt is a sneaky thing. If you let your guard down, the devil will quickly use it against you. When things get hard, I tend to hunker down in my bunker and look for adjustments to make. I also have a great support system. (especially my Mom) and team.
What motivates you to get up and keep going?
I’m a natural nuturer, so I’m passionate about seeing others smile. My patient advocacy, business consulting and the Veteran’s Ball are all designed to bring smile and joy to everyone. Even The National Spades & National Dance Championships share the same goal. Happiness. When my clients are happy, so am I.
Is it true that you founded National Patient Rights Week?
Thank you so much. I’m extremely humbled by your words. Yes, in honor of my son, KJ, and the many other American citizens who die unnecessarily due to some sort of medical malpractice, I created National Patient Rights Week. The 2nd Annual National Patient Rights Week will be May 13-19, 2022.
Let me add that although medical malpractice is a serious issue, it doesn’t negate the fact that America has some great physicians. I’m definitely not anti-physician. I just so happen to be pro-patient and pro-patient knowledge. When patients and their advocates are involved and knowledgeable, fewer medical mistakes happen. That’s a win-win for everyone.
I’ve written a couple of books on patient advocacy. ‘The Dumb Patient’ and ‘The Dumb Patient Meets COVID’, so i’m very passionate about the issue. I’m currently in the process of launching The Patient Rights Institute. Here we will train Patient Advocate Coaches and Patient Advocates. We woant anyone who wants to speak out on behalf of their sick and/or elderly loved one to have access to the information they need.
Due to COVID, America is more divided than ever. Do you have any advice for your fellow Americans?
Sadly, the entire world has been divided due to COVID. My best advice to everyone across the world is, ‘Don’t be a COVID bully!’ Everyone I know has been affected by COVID. Yes, EVERYONE! We can agree on one thing. We all want COVID to end.
Vaccinated or not, everyone and get and transmit COVID! Thus, we can choose to be kind. Love, respect and kindness are choices. Let’s choose to respect each other. Again… ‘Don’t be a COVID bully!’
