From India to the States – A journey in mastering Taekwondo

Shankaran Jayakumaran traveled from his home country India to the United States where he learned Taekwondo and is now a masterful trainer himself

Charlotte, NC, United States – Shankaran Jayakumaran is the owner and chief instructor at Queen City ATA martial arts. He started learning Taekwondo in 2010 through the American Taekwondo Association earning his 3rd Degree Black Belt in 2018 and currently has set a goal for himself for 4th degree Black Belt.

In his time in the United States Shankaran Jayakumaran has worked hard to increase his knowledge in the martial arts by becoming a certified Legacy Instructor in the ATA. He also became a Certified Weapon Instructor in Single Ssahng Jeol Bahng and Level 1 Gum do Weapon Form. Other than this, he worked hard to become a Certified Level 2 Krav Maga Instructor as well as a Certified Kali Instructor.

Shankaran Jayakumaran was announced as the Tennessee State Champion in Forms, Weapons, Sparring, and Combat Sparring in 2016. Through this, he was announced and recognized as one of the Top 10 Competitors for Weapons in the World in 2016. With all of his credentials and achievements, Shankaran Jayakumaran became a school owner and started his own ATA Club in 2019 and currently teaches around 40 students from the age bracket of 4-50 years. Moreover, he also is a Certified Chief Judge through which he judges in regional and national Tournaments.

As a successful Chief Instructor, his goal is to start a full-time academy by the end of 2022. In the Martial Arts Center where he currently teaches, the main goal is also always to encourage people through leadership. The quality of leadership is reflected in the standards that one person can set for oneself and the ones around him. The ATA has created a program that will give their students the foundation in which they can train as leaders of tomorrow with the highest of standards.

Shankaran Jayakumaran shares similar goals for the kids that he teaches. He wants to teach the art of Songahm Taekwondo with the aim of helping kids become the best versions of themselves and the best martial artists as well. Shankaran Jayakumaran presents his favorite quotes to his students in which he says, “train with the champion mindset and never quit when you are tired, quit when you are done.” Based on his own experiences, he has a number of motivational quotes that can help his students with their personal taekwondo journey. he is a firm believer in “practice until your brain forgets and body remembers”, and “if it doesn’t hurt, it doesn’t work”.

As a person, Shankaran Jayakumaran has grown exponentially in his years from transitioning from a dedicated Songahm Taekwondo Student to school owner. He knows how to put in the hard work to achieve the dreams that people are so keen on seeing. Even though he came to the States on a work visa, and his work required him to travel a lot, he never stopped training and followed his passion for becoming what he is today.
