Insurance Careers Movement: Doing More Than Talking About Diversity (AM BestTV)

In this episode of AMBestTV, Marguerite Tortorello, managing director, Insurance Careers Movement, says tapping employee resources groups and mentoring are among the ways insurers are striving to improve diversity. Click on http://www.ambest.com/v.asp?v=tortorello1020 to view the entire program.

Diversity has become a key initiative in many insurance industry workplaces, which has grappled with recruitment for several years. Tortorello discussed how the industry has recognized the need for diversity.

“People are really focusing on what are the actions a whole company can take,” said Tortorello. “You are seeing large initiatives by companies, and that is exciting to see. So many companies have employee resource groups, and it is a great network to tap in to do something differently.”

Tortorello also highlighted how important mentoring is when it comes to diversity recruiting.

“Companies talk about the lack of mentors, sponsors and access. When you think about who has access to certain meetings, who has access to executives, mentoring is tied in with all of that,” she said.

The Insurance Careers Movement is an industrywide initiative designed to raise awareness of the diverse career options that risk management and insurance offer. AM Best is actively participating in the movement to address the industry’s critical talent gap issue.
