FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BENTONVILLE, AR, January 28, 2020 — Walmart has announced a $5 million grant to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) in Washington, D.C. Walmart is making the grant as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to advancing causes that promote inclusion and diversity.

Since it was opened in 2016, more than seven million visitors have explored the NMAAHC, and explored its exhibits and more than three thousand artifacts on display. As the only national museum focused exclusively on documenting African American life, history and culture, it is a public institution open to all, welcoming anyone to participate, collaborate, and learn about African American culture and history. Walmart also hosted a private event to celebrate the museum’s contributions and acknowledge the vital role the Congressional Black Caucus played to help to make the museum a reality.

This grant is the second Walmart has made in support of the museum’s initiatives. The company also donated $5 million in 2010 to help finance the design and construction of the facility. This second 5 million dollar investment will benefit the visitor services programs, the corporate leadership council and several other areas including scholarship and research, exhibitions and emerging technologies, collections and acquisitions, and education and public programs.

These donations are part of Walmart and the Walmart Foundation’s goal of transforming systems to help create more equitable opportunities for all. Specifically, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation invest in diversifying talent pipelines, building more inclusive small business ownership and enhancing community cohesion. Most recently, Walmart funded a report produced by FSG, which highlights steps employers can take to remove barriers to advancement of frontline employees of color.
