Securian Announces Employee Hiring and Promotions

Securian Financial Group announces newly-hired employees and existing employees promotions. Promoting from within aligns with Securian’s policy of recruiting and retaining high-quality individuals to serve its clients.

New Employees

Maryam B. Shapland, M.D., joins Securian as associate medical director. A graduate St. Olaf College and the University of Minnesota Medical School with training in Emergency Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland, Shapland is board certified in Emergency Medicine. Her responsibilities within Securian’s Medical Department include working closely with Securian’s Group and Individual Underwriting Departments as well as with the Claims Department, providing medical opinions and advice.

David M. Dimitri, CLU, FFSI, ChFC, CRCP, Securian senior counsel, holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and a Juris Doctor, Cum Laude, from John Marshall Law School, Chicago. His Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor designation is from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Dave is responsible for providing legal support for Securian’s individual annuity business and related securities operations.

Employee Promotions

Seth J. Detert, FSA, MAAA, has risen to the position of director and senior associate actuary for Securian Life Products. In this new role, Seth provides strategic direction and prioritization for product development, implementation and in-force management and leads a team that provides product support on illustrations, administration and pricing. He helps balance the Individual Life Product Manufacturer’s sales, earning and risk objectives. An employee since 2000, Seth holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Gustavus Adolphus College, is a Fellow in the Society of Actuaries and is a member of the American Academy of Actuaries.

William M. Gould, CPA, CMA, FLMI, was promoted to vice-president of Securian Financial Institution Group (SFIG). He joined Securian in 1995 as an intern and moved to a full-time position in 1996. Bill holds a Master of Business Administration and Bachelor of Science from the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. He heads the SFIG division with direct oversight for business development, financial management, strategic planning, marketing and operations.

Jacob D. Jones, FSA, is now director and actuary for Life Product Manufacturer and is responsible for assessing and managing risk within Securian’s individual life product line. A Securian associate since 1997, he holds a Bachelor of Science in math and economics from North Central College, Naperville, Illinois, and is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries.

Joshua M. Klaetsch, CFA, is now investment officer for Real Estate Securities. Josh holds a Master of Business Administration in Real Estate from the University of Wisconsin and a Bachelor of Arts in Management and Economics from Luther College. His new responsibilities include both quantitative and qualitative analysis of Advantus’ real estate securities. He also recommends changes to allocations at both sector and individual security levels. He joined Securian in 2008.

Daniel P. Preiner, FLMI, CIPP/US, was promoted to Securian corporate compliance officer. He holds a Juris Doctor from William Mitchell College of Law and a Bachelor of Arts from St. John’s University. With Securian since 2011, Dan now oversees the company’s corporate compliance department.

Michael T. Steinert is senior counsel for Securian Financial Group. He joined Securian in 2008 and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Finance from the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota, and a Juris Doctor degree from William Mitchell College of Law. In his new role, he serves as legal counsel to Securian's Wealth Management Group, Advantus Capital Management, Inc. and the Securian Funds Trust
