Working from within the body, the Inspire implant synchronizes with the patient’s natural breathing process and keeps the airway open without unpleasant side effects. According to a European Respiratory Society study, 96% of patients say they prefer it to CPAP and 93% would recommend it to family and friends.
At the center, led by board-certified sleep medicine specialist Dr. Ronald Popper, patients undergo minor surgery during which a small Inspire impulse generator is implanted just below their clavicle. A breathing-sensing lead is placed between the ribs and a stimulation lead is attached to the hypoglossal nerve that controls movement of the tongue and airway muscles. When the device detects airway closure, it sends mild stimulation to move these muscles and open the breathing passages, allowing for uninterrupted breathing.
Controlled by a handheld remote, the Inspire device can be turned on before bed and off after waking. Its stimulation strength can be adjusted, and patients can pause the therapy if needed without getting out of bed.
