Metro Cities Media found that there is a government and building industry war on construction waste. There is a battle to minimise waste in all aspects of building projects. Currently the construction industry produces more than 19 million tonnes of waste, 45% of which is deposited in landfill. Resulting in increased energy consumption, contamination, landfill reliance and depletion of new finite resources.
In 2013, UK architect Duncan Baker-Brown used over 90% waste materials to build the Brighten Waste House and lift awareness of the growing building waste issue. Baker-Brown combined various different materials from used denim to plastic DVD cases and discarded toothbrushes to make the wall cavity insulation, old bicycle inner tubes were used to provide sound and impact floor insulation. Around 10 tonnes of chalky soil destined for landfill was diverted to create rammed earth walls, while used carpet tiles rescued from an office provided exterior cladding.
