The new awareness campaign explains that endoscopy is not new, and has been used for decades in other fields, including gynecology, urology, and orthopedics. Dr. Cole explains how it allows surgeons to make smaller, less obvious incisions to get a view of the procedure from inside the body.
Like with any surgery, the risk of complications depends on many factors, including the experience of the surgeon. Dr. Cole recommends that patients ensure their chosen surgeon has spent at least several years perfecting these techniques and has completed numerous successful operations.
The risks examined in the new campaign vary based on the type of procedure, though the majority are considered minor and can be resolved without requiring a second operation. To determine if endoscopic procedures are suited to a patient, Dr. Cole explains a surgeon will first have to discuss the patient’s specific procedure, desired results, and physical condition.
Recent studies have shown that endoscopic procedures completed by an experienced professional often have fewer complications because the surgeon has improved awareness of the patient’s anatomy throughout the operation. The campaign explains that with the newest endoscopic techniques patients can often reduce their recovery times, but will still be required to complete follow-up appointments to determine their progress and how they can achieve the best possible results.
