On the second day of the Chinese New Year, coinciding with the 120th anniversary of Yue Opera’s birth, “Yue Rhyme Chinese New Year — 2026 Yue Opera Spring Festival Gala” aired as scheduled. The Festival gala gathered Chinese top opera masters, accomplished singers, and Yue Opera enthusiasts from around the globe to present an artistic feast that combined classical inheritance, cross‑genre fusion, and technological expression—showcasing to the world the boundless possibilities of Eastern traditional arts in a contemporary context.
Zhejiang Satellite TV’s virtual host Gu Xiaoyu appeared alongside with the network’s first robot host Lan Xiaotian to create a “cyber stage” that transcended reality. Over a dozen traditional opera skills were brought to life within digital settings, offering global audiences a visually futuristic spectacle.
The Festival gala also spotlighted a cultural journey crossing mountains and seas. Performers who came to Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region,in 1959 to support local opera were invited to the event.They enjoyed a collaborative operatic piece, “Chasing the Wind.” and shared their own personal experiences. This precious “a powerful story of cultural connection across regions” painted a touching picture of cultural connection across different backgrounds and conveyed to overseas viewers the inclusive spirit at the heart of Chinese culture.
The global “Searching for Lin Meimei” campaign commemorating Wang Wenjuan’s 100th anniversary attracted participants from many countries. The Festival gala also received New Year greetings from Yue Opera fans in the United States, Hungary, Austria, France, Canada, Singapore and more—illustrating Yue Opera’s vitality through performances in Europe, promotion of “The Butterfly Lovers” in New Zealand, and the establishment of a formal teaching system in Ottawa, Canada.
Zhejiang Satellite TV’s Yue Opera Spring Festival Gala not only strengthened Yue Opera’s numerical hallmarks of “Picturesque Zhejiang” but also served as a vivid practice of “creative transformation and development of traditional Chinese culture”. It is offering a distinctive “Zhejiang model” to promote Chinese culture beyond our national borders.
