March 28, 2025 - A new research study that looked at 366 manufacturing business websites in the UK has revealed that over 40% of them failed at Search Engine Optimisation basics.
The study, carried out by Tudge Digital, specifically looked at website title tags - a critical element to on-page optimisation. If a business’s homepage title isn’t optimised, it’s very likely the rest of the website isn’t.
Matt Tudge of Tudge Digital said… "Search Engine Optimisation is a key channel for businesses to invest in but many severely underinvest. Unlike paid media, growth from search compounds over time. And, statistics show that B2B companies generate 2x more revenue from organic search than other channels."
Here are the key findings from the analysis…
- 40.71% of websites contained no keyword at all in their homepage title.
- Just 23.77% of titles were the optimal 50-60 character length.
- 35.52% were less than 35 characters in length.
- 7.38% were 10 characters or less, which provides no useful information at all to users or search engines.
- 16.94% included generic terms like "Home" or "Home Page"
- 3.01% of all titles had the word “Home” and nothing else. 3.28% included the domain name.
- The longest title tag from the study was an excessive 168 characters, while the shortest was just 3 characters.
Title tags are the second most important on-page SEO factor after content quality, according to Moz. A well-crafted title can help businesses become more visible online and improve click-through rates - increasing traffic and revenue potential.
The real business impact
Manufacturers with poorly optimised websites will likely face higher customer acquisition costs, as they potentially rely more heavily on paid advertising. Also, 95% of search engine traffic goes to the first page of Google, so if a business isn’t ranking on page 1 they’re basically invisible.
What actions can UK manufacturers take?
- Conduct a basic title tag audit - Ensure your homepage title includes your primary product/service keywords and company name within 50-60 characters.
- Review competitor title tags - See how industry leaders are positioning themselves in search results.
- Implement a broader SEO review - If your homepage isn't optimised, other crucial pages likely need attention too.
- Consult with an SEO specialist - Professional guidance can identify quick wins and long-term SEO strategies.
