Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS with Hosted Control Planes in AWS GovCloud Achieves FedRAMP High Authorization

FedRAMP High Authorization for Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS with hosted control planes in AWS GovCloud simplifies compliance and accelerates modern application delivery for U.S. government agencies and their partners

Red Hat, the world's leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS in AWS GovCloud now offers support for hosted control plane architecture, achieving an incremental addition to the service’s Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) High Authorization. The authorization for the hosted control plane architecture builds upon the existing FedRAMP High approval previously granted to Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS in AWS GovCloud classic architecture. With this authorization, U.S. federal agencies can utilize a fully managed application platform with hosted control plane architecture that meets the government’s most rigorous security standards, simplifying the compliance process required for procuring and operating cloud products and services.

The hosted control plane architecture further streamlines the customer experience by offloading the complex lifecycle management and security monitoring of the Kubernetes control plane and its underlying infrastructure. Engineered, managed and supported by Red Hat and AWS, this approach allows agencies to consume enterprise Kubernetes directly as an AWS cloud service, which significantly lowers the operational barrier for modernizing their workloads. For customers this results in more efficient resource use, which can lead to improved security posture, operational reliability and cost savings.

The U.S. government faces the dual challenge of modernizing aging IT infrastructure while strictly adhering to complex security and compliance mandates. With FedRAMP High Authorization, Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS with hosted control planes in AWS GovCloud is capable of handling the federal government’s most sensitive, unclassified data. By offering this enhanced security profile, Red Hat and AWS are helping federal agencies accelerate their cloud adoption, modernize mission-critical applications and transition to open hybrid cloud environments with confidence.

Empowering the Federal Mission With Security and Agility

FedRAMP is a government-wide program that promotes the adoption of secure cloud services across the federal government by providing a standardized approach to security assessment, authorization and continuous monitoring for cloud products and services. FedRAMP introduced their High Impact Level to account for the government’s most sensitive, unclassified data in cloud computing environments.

With the FedRAMP High designation for Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS with hosted control planes in AWS GovCloud, government agencies can take advantage of key benefits, including:

  • Handling of sensitive data: The High Authorization level ensures Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS with hosted control planes in AWS GovCloud meets the security requirements for processing the U.S. government’s most sensitive, unclassified data, including criminal justice, financial and health records.
  • Simplified compliance: Agencies gain an accelerated path to Authority to Operate (ATO) by leveraging a platform with an existing High Authorization, reducing the time and resources needed for security assessments.
  • Managed operations: Backed by a world-class site reliability engineering team, Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS with hosted control planes in AWS GovCloud reduces the operational overhead for agencies, allowing them to focus highly skilled personnel on developing and deploying mission-specific applications.
