Before her publishing career, Ms. Goodwin worked in education and engineering. She began as a middle school teacher of math, chemistry and physics, inspired by her own high school chemistry teacher. She later entered the oil and gas industry, holding positions with Tymco Oil Company and BP and breaking barriers as the first female offshore drilling engineer supervisor in the Gulf of Mexico. She went on to lead TP Exploration, overseeing leases and geological surveys in the northwestern United States for nearly 30 years.

Ms. Goodwin also contributed to civil engineering projects in East Texas, where she designed and improved water and wastewater treatment systems. Her work has been widely recognized. In addition to her Aggie Women Legacy Award, her children's book, "GG Cleans House: Learning Teamwork," was honored with multiple awards in 2021.
