Dr. Hickman will look for the two ends of the vas deferens and free them from the surrounding scar tissue. He will them perform a microsurgical repair of the vas using an operating microscope and 10-0 nylon suture, which is thinner than human hair. He will carefully align the lumen of the two ends of the vas and create a watertight closure. Before performing the closure, he will first take a sample fluid from the testicular end of the vas deferens. Since the testicles don’t stop producing sperm even after the vasectomy, the fluid should contain some sperm. A third possibility is that the sample fluid doesn’t contain sperm or sperm parts.
