-- Newman University has named Dr. Tim Cho as the new dean of its School of Healthcare Professions, effective summer 2025, university officials announced.

Cho, who holds an M.D. from the University of Cincinnati, brings extensive experience in healthcare education and clinical practice to the role. He will oversee nearly 35% of Newman's student population across five academic programs within the school.

"With a background in respiratory care, an M.D. from the University of Cincinnati and as program director and division chair, Dr. Cho is well prepared to lead the school and support its continued growth and impact," said Alden Stout, vice president of Academic Affairs at Newman.

Cho's journey at Newman began as an adjunct faculty member while working in respiratory therapy. After transitioning to full-time higher education in 2019, he advanced through multiple leadership positions, serving as program director of respiratory care from 2022 to 2025 and division chair beginning in spring 2024.

Prior to his academic career, Cho worked as a shift manager at a Wichita hospital, where he developed expertise in budgeting, productivity metrics, and human resources management—skills that proved valuable in his educational leadership roles.

Working alongside Stacie Fox, current director of the respiratory care program, Cho helped grow program enrollment while maintaining high retention rates and strong graduate outcomes. The pair also strengthened partnerships with local high schools and career academies.

"Tim is driven by a passion for ensuring student success," Fox said. "What I have always appreciated is his ability to see potential in someone else, even before they do. I have no doubt he will be an inspiring dean."

Cho's decision to pursue the dean position was influenced by his former colleague, Dr. Geri Tyrell, who served as dean from 2022 to 2025 and now holds the role of associate vice president of academic affairs.

"Her steady, compassionate leadership helped guide the school through some challenging seasons," Cho said. "Watching her navigate those moments with both strength and grace affirmed for me the importance of mission-driven leadership."

As dean, Cho plans to prioritize simulation and interdisciplinary education to enhance student learning in both classroom and clinical settings. He emphasized the importance of helping students develop communication skills and appreciation for healthcare teamwork.

"Students will gain a deeper appreciation for their health care teammates and develop communication skills to deliver quality patient care," Cho said.

Cho noted that his clinical and leadership experience, including work in a Catholic health system, aligns well with Newman's mission and values of compassion, excellence, integrity, service to the poor, and reverence.

Looking ahead, Cho expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with faculty, students, and community partners "as we continue to grow, innovate, and serve our communities."

Newman University's School of Healthcare Professions offers programs designed to prepare students for careers in various healthcare fields, emphasizing hands-on learning and community service aligned with the university's Catholic mission.
