Northern Gym Equipment Completes Study To Determine The UK’s Strongest City

The first-of-its-kind research analysed thousands of home weights purchases across the UK.

-- Following an extensive nationwide study, experts at Northern Gym Equipment have officially revealed the UK’s strongest cities based on verified real fitness equipment sales across the country.

Hereford ranked the UK’s #1 strongest city

Northern's nationwide analysis comes directly from real fitness equipment sales covering a host of home weights, including dumbbells, plates, and kettlebells. After reviewing sales across hundreds of locations, the retailer’s data has seen Hereford crowned as the UK’s strongest city.

As the first dataset of its kind to quantify regional strength training habits, the analysis ranked cities based on the percentage of weights purchased that were at least 20kg. The full dataset also details the total volume of sales made in each location over an extended period to produce a substantial dataset that covers thousands of sales.

However, due to the vast contrasts in populations and sales, cities were ranked based on percentages. Sales figures in Hereford show that nearly 27% of all product purchases are 20kg or heavier, placing it ahead of other high-ranking cities like Dudley, Ilford, Newport, and Warrington.

With over one in four sales being weights of at least 20kg, fitness enthusiasts in Hereford are not shy about lifting heavy.

At the bottom end of the table, analysis found that sales categorised as ‘heavy weights’ were under 5% in Slough, Canterbury, and Watford. In those locations, buyers typically opted for the smaller weights, although they still purchased the same product types - including dumbbells, plates, kettlebells, and more.

The data challenges fitness stereotypes, showing strength hotspots in less-expected towns while also suggesting the variance in demographics seen across different UK cities. It also taps into the growing trend of functional fitness and strength training in the post-lockdown years. Sales also included purchases made by home gym enthusiasts and commercial gyms alike.

At a time when an estimated 40-50% of UK adults have home gym equipment, the analysis of recent studies across the country provides valuable insights into trends. Not least because the full dataset shows how many people are buying weights in each location, as well as the hotspots where heavier weights are typically purchased.

All data comes from verified sales made through Northern. Comprehensive ranked tables of the top and bottom cities, as well as bar chart visuals, and data CSVs are available upon request.
