Cognitive Reset Counseling integrates advanced brain mapping and neurofeedback therapy with traditional psychotherapy techniques to provide a faster, more effective path to mental wellness.
-- Revolutionizing Mental Health Treatment with Neurofeedback Therapy
Cognitive Reset Counseling, based in New York City, is at the forefront of an innovative approach to mental health care by combining cutting-edge neurofeedback technology with evidence-based psychotherapy. The practice is one of the few in the area to offer quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG), also known as brain mapping, and remote neurofeedback training, enabling clinicians to track brain wave activity in real time and create personalized treatment plans designed to address the unique needs of each client.
As the practice’s founder and lead clinician, Stephanie Sanz, understands the power of these therapies firsthand. Having personally experienced and overcome panic disorder through a combination of psychotherapy and neurofeedback, Sanz is passionate about helping others navigate their mental health challenges. "Neurofeedback is a highly effective treatment for those struggling with anxiety, trauma, and stress,” said Sanz. “It is a great alternative for clients who don’t want to be in therapy for years at a time or who, for whatever reason, do not find medication to be helpful.”
Understanding Brain Mapping and Neurofeedback
Brain mapping works by recording the brain's electrical activity through non-invasive electrodes that are placed on the scalp. The data from the recordings is analyzed to identify areas of the brain that are contributing to the problematic symptoms that the client is experiencing. Having this information allows the clinician to create a customized psychotherapy or neurofeedback training treatment program to help the client achieve optimal results.
According to Sanz, “Clients can benefit from a brain map alone to help guide the psychotherapy work that they do with their therapist but for clients who want to cut treatment time and get to the core of their anxiety symptoms, I usually recommend going for neurofeedback training.”
“Neurofeedback training sessions utilize media, such as audio or video, sometimes both, to let the client know when they are producing the desired brain waves. While the client is hooked up to the technology, they are instructed to pay attention to the feedback given from sound or video. If their brain is creating the target brainwaves, the sound will raise or the video brightness will increase. If they are not, the sound and brightness will decrease respectively. The idea is to get the brain to learn how to produce the desired brain waves at the subconscious level. Doing this overtime creates new neural networks and subsequent new ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving,” says Sanz.
Sanz found further validation to support the effectiveness of neurofeedback when picking up the New York Times best selling nonfiction book The Body Keeps the Score, by renowned author and pioneering researcher Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk. In his book, he explains the benefits of neurofeedback therapy, particularly for individuals dealing with trauma and anxiety. He purports that neurofeedback can significantly enhance traditional therapeutic practices, offering individuals a deeper and more lasting recovery.
“I already knew the benefits of neurofeedback before reading Van Der Kolk’s work, being that I personally did neurofeedback training, but the fact that his book is a best seller, it introduced neurofeedback on a larger scale and has opened people’s eyes to the significant potential of neurofeedback to change their lives,” explained Sanz. “More people are now willing and eager to use it to gain faster relief from their symptoms and make lasting improvements in their mental health.”
What Sets Cognitive Reset Counseling Apart?
Unlike traditional therapy practices, Cognitive Reset Counseling is one of the few in the New York City area to offer an integrative approach using brain maps and psychotherapy. The ability to combine a brain map with evidence-based psychotherapy techniques, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) offers clients a holistic and multifaceted approach to mental wellness.
The practice is also one of the very few practices that offer remote neurofeedback training that the client can do in the comfort of their own home. “Other than the brain map, which needs to be done in person, subsequent neurofeedback training sessions can be done remotely, meaning that the client can do their sessions in their pajamas if they want to,” says Sanz.
The practice's approach has already helped countless clients achieve lasting improvements in their mental health. It also sets Cognitive Reset Counseling apart as a unique and innovative practice in the mental health community.
Accessible Online Coaching for Stress and Anxiety
In addition to neurofeedback psychotherapy services, Sanz also offers an online coaching course specifically designed to help individuals reduce anxiety quickly. “I have met people around the world that want to work with me on their anxiety but there are limitations to how I can help as a therapist. So, as an anxiety coach, I created an on demand online course for people to work on their anxiety,” Sanz said. The course integrates psychology, neuroscience, and spirituality to provide practical tools for managing anxiety and stress. It’s part of her broader mission to make mental wellness accessible to a wider audience and provide the resources needed for individuals to take control of their mental health abroad and on their own time.
