Survey of the Three-River-Source (Chinese edition), published by Science Press, will be globally launched on 24 July in Yushu, Qinghai Province, at the Opening Ceremony of the Third China Wildlife Photography Exhibition. This publication, by the Three-River-Source Academy presents findings of the first panoramic field survey of the Three-River-Source and reveals how man and nature coexist in great harmony in the Three-River-Source National Park. It is an epitome of Chinese modernization, a hallmark of the community of the Chinese nation, and a signature achievement of scientific investigations on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau.

Survey of the Three-River-Source (Chinese edition) tells the world about how China advocates ecological civilization by presenting vivid stories of 20 villages in the core area of the Three-River-Source region. As Lian Yuming, Chief Expert of the Three-River-Source National Park Administration, member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and the Director of the Three-River-Source Academy, wrote in the preface to the book, the Three-River-Source is an important symbol of the international ecological civilization highland of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. It is the origin of China’s myriad mountains, rivers, life forms, national parks and cultures. It is a “matter of national significance” in China’s ecological civilization construction, holding an irreplaceable strategic position in the development of Chinese and human civilization. The Three-River-Source has not only national significance but also global influence, becoming an international window showcasing China’s image and promoting mutual learning among civilizations.

To complete this survey, the research team visited all of the 45 counties, cities and prefectures of Qinghai Province, especially the 28 towns and townships in Yushu Prefecture, and interviewed over 500 local residents over a time period of two years. Now, the findings of this strenuous survey lay a solid foundation for building a theoretical system for the Three-River-Source Studies and provide major insights for further understanding of the Yellow River-centered culture. Lian Yuming, editor-in-chief of Survey of the Three-River-Source (Chinese edition), told journalists that the traditional view of dividing the Yellow River into the upper, middle and lower reaches must change, as there should be a fourth section of the river, that is, its headwaters area to the west of the Riyue Mountain. By attaching greater importance to this headwaters section of the river, the Yellow River culture will be restructured to feature the river source culture, the Hehuang culture, the Guanzhong culture, the Heluo culture, and the Qilu culture, forming a new theoretical system. This will allow the river source culture to have its due position in the system and provide a sound basis for including archaeological excavation and protection efforts on the plateau centered around the river source culture in the project to trace the origins of Chinese civilization. In dealing with the Three-River-Source region, more importance should be attached to protection and conservation to keep the ecosystems here intact so as to conserve biodiversity, build sound systems for safeguarding the eco-environmental security, enhance the capacity for water conservation, and improve environmental resilience, while minimizing human intervention. The aim is to establish the Three-River-Source National Park as a model nature reserve that can represent China and exert global influence.

Survey of the Three-River-Source (Chinese edition) is a new landmark achievement of the Three-River-Source Academy following the creation of the Three-River-Source Studies, and the establishment of the China Crane Research Base in Longbao, and the Yueguzongliequ Yellow River Source Protection and Research Base. It is also an important outcome of the “Protecting the Mother River, Guarding the Three-River-Source” research on Yushu’s high-quality development by experts in the capital and the “service for the people” efforts made by members of the CPPCC National Committee. Along with the book launch, a photography exhibition will also be staged, themed on the field survey in the Three-River-Source region.
