Finance Leader Advocates for Scalable Support for Minority-Owned Businesses and Disabled Veterans in Recent Feature Interview

In a newly released spotlight interview, Mark Andrew Kozlowski, Managing Partner of NYSA Capital LLC, is using his platform to call for stronger, sustained support for underserved entrepreneurs—particularly minority-owned businesses and disabled veterans. Drawing from over 30 years of experience in corporate finance, commercial real estate, and systems consulting, Kozlowski urges leaders in both the private and public sectors to think beyond capital and focus on mentorship, networks, and practical tools.

“It’s not just about writing checks,” Kozlowski said in the interview. “It’s about opening doors, making connections, and offering mentorship. Our goal is to make sure success isn’t just for the lucky few.”

Kozlowski’s message comes at a critical time. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, Black-owned businesses receive less than 2% of venture capital funding annually. Veterans face similar challenges—nearly 60% report difficulty accessing startup capital, despite strong skills and work ethic.

“These are businesses with potential. What’s often missing is access,” Kozlowski said. “If we can give underserved founders the tools and the relationships they need, the results can be transformational—for them, their communities, and the economy.”

In the interview, Kozlowski also proposed the idea of a mentorship platform connecting retired finance professionals with small businesses to provide guidance and strategic support.

“There’s so much wisdom out there,” he said. “We should be using it. A lot of the people who’ve built successful careers are ready to give back. We just need to give them a clear way to plug in.”

Kozlowski’s own firms have taken action by designing inclusive support programs that go beyond financial transactions. These include resource-sharing, structured mentoring, and assistance navigating the regulatory and real estate landscape.

His advocacy aligns with broader economic trends. A 2023 McKinsey report found that closing the racial wealth gap could add $1.5 trillion to the U.S. economy by 2028. Meanwhile, the Department of Veterans Affairs emphasizes that veteran-owned small businesses employ over 5 million Americans—a number that could grow with more robust early-stage support.

What You Can Do

Kozlowski isn’t asking for policy alone. He’s calling for participation—at every level.

  • Mentors: Retired professionals and business veterans can reach out to local chambers, nonprofit accelerators, and incubators to offer their expertise.

  • Investors: Those in finance can prioritize diverse pipelines and offer time, not just capital.

  • Communities: Consumers can support veteran- and minority-owned businesses in their area through intentional purchasing.

  • Leaders: Executives can build or sponsor mentorship programs within their organizations and industries.

“Finance is a tool,” Kozlowski said. “How we use it—that’s what defines us.”
