About the Author
Wayne R. Ferren Jr. is a conscientious objector who performed alternative civilian service during the Vietnam War and has dedicated his life to environmental science, pacifism, and education. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geology and a Master’s Degree in Biology from Rutgers University. Ferren spent 26 years at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), where he played a pivotal role in developing restoration ecology programs and directed multiple research and education initiatives, including a museum and natural reserves. A former president of the California Botanical Society and editor of Madroño – A West American Journal of Botany, Ferren has authored numerous scientific articles and received twelve environmental awards.
