Dexter, MI - Nature & Nurture Seeds is thrilled to introduce the Jada Organic Tomato, a strikingly beautiful and flavorful addition to the company’s tomato offerings. This new variety, distinguished by its pink skin and golden stripes, boasts a deliciously sweet and tangy taste, making it perfect for snacking, salads, and lunchboxes. The early ripening fruit grows in abundant trusses, giving gardeners a generous and dependable harvest. Jada marks a significant milestone as the first tomato release from owner Erica Kempter’s tomato breeding program, a project years in the making.
The development of the Jada Organic Tomato was a collaborative effort supported by the Midwest Plant Breeding Network, funded through an Organic Research and Extension Initiative (OREI) grant. Nature & Nurture Seeds partnered with leading agricultural researchers and growers through initiatives like the Seed to Kitchen Collaborative at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Organic Seed Alliance, SeedLinked, KC Tomatoes, and eOrganic. This joint effort sought to breed open-pollinated (OP), open-source, and regionally adapted cherry and saladette tomatoes with vigorous growth, rich flavor, and resilience in Midwest growing conditions.
To develop Jada, Erica crossed the well-known Juliet and Blush tomato varieties. The resulting F3 seeds were distributed to participating growers across the Upper Midwest for trial and selection. One standout grower, Greg Reynolds from Delano, MN, selected the plant that would become Jada from the diverse group of trial plants. Over subsequent seasons, the variety was refined, tested, and ultimately recognized as a top performer. The tomato earned its name in honor of its vibrant appearance and delightful flavor profile.
Jada's distinctive pink-and-gold-striped fruit matures in just 61 days, outpacing similar varieties like Pink Tiger while delivering a superior eating experience. Its firm texture, balanced flavor, and eye-catching appearance make it an excellent garden companion to Blush and Green Tiger tomatoes. Growers should be aware that the fruit's stripes may fade if heavily shaded by foliage; however, the plant's overall performance remains consistently robust.
Sales from Jada Organic Tomato support Nature Nurture’s ongoing tomato breeding program, ensuring the continued development of flavorful, regionally adapted varieties. The Jada Organic Tomato seeds are now available through Nature & Nurture Seeds’ website.
Committed to seed sovereignty and sustainable agriculture, Nature & Nurture Seeds actively participates in the Open Source Seed Initiative (OSSI). By releasing seeds like the Jada Organic Tomato as open-source, the company ensures these varieties remain accessible to gardeners and farmers without restrictive patents. This initiative aligns with their mission to empower communities to cultivate their own food while preserving genetic diversity for future generations.
