Marquis Who's Who Honors Michael F. McMaster, CFS, for Expertise in Marine Fish Farming

UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESS Newswire / September 4, 2025 / Marquis Who's Who honors Michael F. McMaster, CFS, for his work in the field of marine fish farming. Mr. McMaster serves as the chief executive officer and senior scientist at Pompano Farms LLC. Established in 1984 as Mariculture Technologies International Inc., the company later transitioned from fish farming to an active consulting firm.

About Mr. McMaster

Mr. McMaster is a recognized world expert in fish larval rearing. In the past, he received an honorarium for farming the Florida pompano, a marine fish, from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. Among his other areas of expertise are business development and the selling of intellectual property focused on fish larval rearing and mariculture, which is the farming of marine species.

Mr. McMaster has a bachelor's degree in fisheries science and management from Utah State University College of Wildlife Biology, now S.J. & Jessie E. Quinney College of Natural Resources. He chose Utah State specifically because, at the time, it was known as one of the top fisheries schools in the United States.

After graduation, Mr. McMaster worked at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, where he worked on a research project focused on discovering how to raise marine pelagic fish in the laboratory. He wrote his first scientific paper on the subject. This paper drew the attention of Oceanography & Mariculture Industries Inc. (OMI), a company searching for how to farm Florida pompano. The company offered Mr. McMaster a job with increased pay and relocated him and his family to Riviera Beach, Florida. There, he developed technology to artificially spawn and fertilize pompano eggs. Subsequently, Mr. McMaster then developed specific hatchery rearing methods for this species. Mr. McMaster later helped establish the first pompano farm in the world in the Dominican Republic in 1972.

Promoting Pompano Farms

In his current role, Mr. McMaster promotes his consulting services, providing intellectual property that includes the technology he developed and a comprehensive manual on pompano mariculture. He also trains buyers and their staff on how to successfully farm fish. He has additionally consulted on several large projects, including one in Samoa, Kenya, Mexico, Egypt, USA, and others.

Though Mr. McMaster is semi-retired, he continues to campaign for marine fish farming and hopes to one day see a pompano farm established in the United States. American consumers struggle to find farmed marine seafood, and when they do, it often comes from countries like China, Vietnam, Indonesia and India.

"The campaign I'm starting now is to try to lobby the government to look at why America doesn't have any homegrown fish seafood. We produce all the corn we need to eat, including tomatoes, beans, peas, wheat and everything else. This is a huge farming nation. But there are zero continental United States warm-water marine fish farms," Mr. McMaster explains.

A Commitment to Marine Farming

The development of commercial marine fish farming in the U.S. has been hindered along all coasts due to the difficulties that federal government regulations create for the industry. This has been a trend that has lasted for over 25 years, and Mr. McMaster hopes to change it.

Mr. McMaster believes South Florida and the Gulf Coast are a good marine farming location due to their warm climate. The farms would not have to deal with the threat of colder temperatures and the natural water sources in the area could also be used.

For his accomplishments and expertise in his field, Mr. McMaster was honored with inclusion in Marquis Who's Who in March of 2025.
