A Passion for Medicine

With a passion for medicine and a desire to make a difference in the lives of critically ill patients, Dr. Arumairaj pursued a career in the medical field. His career began in 2005 with the completion of a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Coimbatore, India. He trained in Internal Medicine at the Royal Australasian College of Physicians from 2010 to 2014 and in Emergency Medicine at the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine from 2014 to 2018.

After nine years in Australia, where he served as an associate lecturer at the University of Queensland, Dr. Arumairaj moved to the U.S., drawn by its established Pulmonary Critical Care programs. Dr. Arumairaj is now an attending physician and clinical assistant professor of medicine at New York Medical College at Metropolitan, where he evaluates patients and plans treatment strategies for their care. He has held this position since 2021 and his concurrent role as an Internal Medicine physician with NYC Health + Hospitals, which he began in 2018.

Research on COVID-19

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck New York in 2020, Dr. Arumairaj's colleagues had the virus, leaving him as the sole ICU resident. He would attend to nine or 10 patients at a time. With an interest in analyzing large data, Dr. Arumairaj has used and studied data to learn more about the impact of the COVID-19 infection. His work focuses on the effects of COVID-19, including higher incidences of heart failure, blood clots in the lungs and legs and heart attacks, as well as how other conditions affected infection rates.

Dr. Arumairaj's research has helped better identify subgroups of the patient population who experienced more severe COVID-19 infections. He hopes to continue his research and analysis to identify high-risk groups and treatment management strategies.

Professional Achievements

Recognized as a B. Braun Foundation Scholar for excellence in Anesthesiology in India, Dr. Arumairaj attributes his success to his family's unwavering support and encouragement. He is a member of numerous associations, including the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American Thoracic Society and the American College of Chest Physicians. Despite setbacks, Dr. Arumairaj's passion for medicine has propelled him forward.
