ACNSL Announces First Annual National Security Book Award Winner

The American College of National Security Leaders announces its selection of Ambassador Herman J. "Hank" Cohen as the 2023 awardee for its first annual book award for his book Africa, You Have a Friend in Washington: An American Diplomat's Adventures in Sub-Saharan Africa

WASHINGTON, D.C. / ACCESSWIRE / July 8, 2024 / On July 4, 2024, the American College of National Security Leaders announced its selection of Ambassador Herman J. "Hank" Cohen as the 2023 awardee for ACNSL's first annual book award for Ambassador Cohen's book Africa, You Have a Friend in Washington; An American Diplomat's Adventure in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Ambassador Cohen's book was published by New Academia Publishing/ VELLUM. A deeply personal account of his career in the Foreign Service in Paris and Africa, this well-written, inspiring memoir will benefit historians and is a must-read for those considering work in the diplomatic field.

The winner receives a cash award of $2000 as well as endorsement of the book by the College. ACNSL established the award to encourage the documentation and discussion of the interrelationship of diplomacy and military power in the practice of national security. In addition to the guidelines on a national security topic, the nominated books must have been written within the past year by an American author and published in America.

Finalists for the award included the following:

  • I Love Russia: Reporting from a Lost Country by Elena Kostyuchenko and translated by Bela Shayevich and Ilona Yazhbin Chavasse, published by Penguin Press.

  • U.S. Naval Power in the 21st Century: A New Strategy for Facing the Chinese and Russian Threat by Brent Sadler, published by Naval Institute Press.

  • By All Means Available: Memoirs of a Life in Intelligence, Special Operations, and Strategy by Michael G. Vickers, published by Alfred A. Knopf, a division of Penguin Random House, LLC.

The retired generals, admirals, ambassadors, and national security executives of ACNSL congratulate Ambassador Cohen as winner and the finalists for their literary achievement.
